Daily chart: global abortion rates. Having fallen precipitously during the 1990s, the global abortion rate has now stalled, according to a new paper. In some parts of the world, the number of abortions termed as “unsafe” is on the rise. Laws that restrict abortion did not seem to lower the number of procedures—on the contrary, restrictive laws were associated with higher abortion rates.

Heartbreaking Tearjerker of the Day: Ed Watson wanted nothing more than to marry his loving, loyal partner of 40 years, Derence Kernek, before succumbing to his rapidly progressing Alzheimer’s.
Back in March, the couple, with the help of the Courage Campaign, released a video plea asking for assistance in convincing the 9th Circuit Court to lift California’s ban on same-sex marriage until a decision on the constitutionality of Proposition 8 was reached.
The court ignored their plea, and, sadly, Ed passed away today, never knowing the joy of marrying his significant other.
“It’s ironic that he died on the eve of appeals about peripheral issues around a case that should have been settled more than a year ago,” said Courage Campaign founder and chairman Richard Jacobs. “None of this will matter to Ed or Derence.”
The LA Times notes that, in addition to depriving the couple of Ed’s dying wish, the ban also prevented him from being covered by his partner’s out-of-state retirement plan, which led to financial hardships.
As a testament to that, Derence could not be reached for comment as their phone had recently been disconnected.

True Love
I took off work today, because some of my favorite people in the city I live in have the day off. We decided the best way to celebrate was by drinking copious amounts of wine at our regular place, and topping it off with goose + sugar free red bull (don’t ask, I don’t’ know why either) at an old person bar with live music. This was all very fun, and we all laughed a lot.
This morning was no laughing matter. Headaches were had. I have self medicated with a combination of food that doesn’t go together, advil and water. But still, it’s early and I’m not getting younger. To the point of the story: true love. My bf had to pop into work early this morning, and didn’t eat breakfast in his hazy hangover state. I am going to go to the grocery and get supplies to make his favorite type of pancakes, and have them out and waiting for when he gets home.
